Here's what Monday night's meeting of Jupiter and the moon looked like through a telescope. This is a composite of three different images of Monday night's moon-Jupiter conjunction, one properly exposed on the moon (1/200 sec), one properly exposed on Jupiter (1/100 sec) and one properly exposed on the Galilean moons (1/2 sec). The moons visible around Jupiter are (top to bottom) Ganymede, Io and Callisto. The star seen near Callisto is 4.9 magnitude Omega Tauri. All three images were taken from Stagecoach within a minute of 8:44 p.m. on Monday using a Nikon D700 digital camera at ISO 400 through a 4-inch Celestron refractor and combined with Graphic Converter. This closely matches what the eye could see through the telescope eyepiece — a marvelous sight! Jimmy Westlake / Courtesy
