Sleeping Giant rests on a stormy Steamboat evening late in September. The lesson from this photo: Keep your eyes open because it's really easy to walk right by a great photograph. With the bright fall foliage framing this shot in front and the rain cloud lingering over Sleeping Giant from above, this one worked out. Joel Reichenberger/courtesy

Not every great fall color photo has to be overlooking a vast vista. A stand of bright red aspen trees on Lynx Pass in South Routt County grew up right next to the road. A housing development was on the other side, so it was hardly some hidden gem. It was, however, beautiful. Holly Nelson
Logs poke out from a pond near Crosho Lake in South Routt County. Good photographers never let a reflection photograph go by unconsidered. In addition to the colors, this one works because the logs carry the viewer's eye straight to the shoreline and the trees. Robert Ball
Sand Mountain looms over a North Routt County fence and a brimming ditch. The lesson: Don't be afraid to change your plan. No one was counting on a roadside ditch offering a great reflection, but it did and it yielded a great photograph. Also, don't leave in too much cloudless blue sky. Richard Grant/Courtesy
The sun sets on Rainbow Ridge on Buffalo Pass. One of Rod Hanna's biggest rules to live by is "You don't know unless you go." That proved true for Rainbow Ridge, one of his favorite spots to photograph. Peak fall colors season had swept by the colorful outlook, but it still yielded a great shot. Jim Wickless/Courtesy
