Troy Hodges extinguishes a small grass fire Tuesday near the intersection of West End Avenue and Downhill Drive. Firefighters arrived moments later and sprayed the area with water. “If this thing had 10 more minutes with the wind like this, it could have been a lot worse,” Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Chief Mel Stewart said at the scene of the fire. “Even though it looks green here, it’s still very dry. We all just need to be very careful with fire.” Routt County was under a red flag warning most of Tuesday because of strong winds, low humidity, high temperatures and an abundance of fire fuels. Stewart said the cause of Tuesday’s small grass fire wasn’t known. Firefighters responded to another fire north of Steamboat, but it was extinguished before they arrived.
