Kiante Garland, from Albany, N.Y., uses a hand saw to cut branches Monday afternoon from a bush along a trail in the Yampa River Preserve. The New York teen was part of a paid internship for The Nature Conservancy’s Leaders Environmental Action for the Future, which takes teens from the inner city and brings them to rural areas like the ones that surround Carpenter Ranch to work on environmental projects like trail maintenance, stream and wildlife surveys, fence building and archaeological monitoring. The teens arrived last week and will continue on projects through Thursday.
