The 21st Intermountain Tennis Association’s Memorial Day 12 and Under Championships was hosted by the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs on Monday. The tournament was won by Artem Iermolov, of Las Vegas, who defeated Redd Owen, of Sandy, Utah, 7-6(2), 7-5, in the boys division and Naomi Cheong, of Las Vegas, defeated Ky Ecton, of Fort Collins, 6-4, 6-0. In this competition between the best 32 players in the six state Intermountain division, Steamboat local Teague Burger had three wins and two losses. He was defeated in the finals in the West Draw, 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4, by Lucas Hammond, of Las Vegas, in what was described by the Tennis Center’s Head Pro Bill Conway as one of the best matches of the weekend. Local Nicole Cerone and South Jordan, Utah’s Wally Thane won the girl’s and boy’s sportsmanship award, a trophy that dates to the first event held at the center in 1993.
