Nathanael Huere proudly displays his purple pinkie during Purple Pinkie Day at Strawberry Park Elementary School on Monday afternoon. The Purple Pinkie Project is an effort by Rotary Club's across the nation, including the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs, to raise money to administer polio vaccine in third world counties. When a Rotary volunteer administers the vaccine in one of those third world countries, the child's pinkie is colored with the topical solution Gentian Violet — temporarily marking the child to prevent double dosage on National Immunization Days. In Steamboat Springs on Monday, children who made a donation had their pinkies colored purple as part of a symbolic showing of support for the project.
