From Arches National Park near Moab, Utah, smoke from distant fires reddened the setting sun as it carried the dark disk of Venus toward the northwestern horizon. Standing in stark silhouette in apparent defiance of gravity, Balanced Rock has, no doubt, seen many transits of Venus before this one. This image is a 1/750 second exposure with a Fuji FinePix S2 Pro digital camera set at ISO 100 through a 300 mm Nikkor telephoto lens at f22. The image was snapped at 8:37 p.m. MDT Tuesday.
