Oak Creek musher Tom Thurston cruises behind his team of dogs, led by Scrat, left, and Duramax near the end of the ceremonial start to the 2011 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska, a day before the race began in earnest. Thurston finished the race March 19 for the second time in three years. Fellow local musher Kris Hoffman made it more than halfway through the race before having to pull out.

Oak Creek musher Tom Thurston finished the 1,150-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race for the second time in three years. He called it a good year. He applied lessons from his previous races — he finished in 2009 and made it about halfway in 2010 — and was better than he’s ever been.
