A few inches of water didn’t stop Steamboat Springs resident Ben Ratliff from riding his bike along the flooded Yampa River Core Trail this summer. Record high-country snowpack resulted in flooding in parts of the county. The Western U.S. will be treated to an annular, or ring, eclipse of the sun on May 20. From Northwest Colorado, the sun will be about 85 percent eclipsed by the moon just before sunset. With a safe solar filter, the event might look very similar to the annular solar eclipse of May 30, 1984, shown here. “Bailey’s Beads” around the edge of the moon are caused by high mountains and low valleys along the moon’s profile allowing the sunlight to stream through.

This image shows Venus’ silhouette in front of the rising sun from Savannah, Ga., during the most recent transit on June 8, 2004.

When the sun nears the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, a large flare or coronal mass ejection can trigger a spectacular display of the northern lights visible from as far south as Colorado, as occurred on April 17, 2001. With the next solar maximum predicted for late 2013, increasing solar activity this year will improve our chances for seeing more vivid auroras.

On June 4, the full moon will slip through the edge of Earth’s shadow, creating a partial lunar eclipse just as dawn brightens the sky. The eclipse might look similar to the one we just experienced on Dec. 10, though it will not be total this time — only 37 percent of the moon will be eclipsed right before moonset.
