Former Steamboat resident suspected after 3 bodies found in tree
An unemployed tree-trimmer, once a Steamboat Springs resident, arrested after a teenage girl was found bound and gagged in his basement pointed the way Thursday to the bodies of her brother, mother and another woman, stuffed into garbage bags and hidden in a hollow tree, authorities said.
Neighbors and acquaintances of Matthew Hoffman never knew what to make of him. He was controlling, peculiar and smart in a scary way, they said. The 30-year-old, who spent six years in a Colorado prison before returning to Ohio, is charged with kidnapping a 13-year-old girl who was found bound and gagged in his basement. A judge Tuesday set his bond at $1 million.
Authorities in Ohio continued to search Monday night for three missing people connected to a 13-year-old girl who was found bound and gagged in the basement of a man with Steamboat Springs ties. Matthew John Hoffman is in custody in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
