Steamboat Springs resident Nelson Carmichael competes during the Spring Bumps & Jumps competition in Breckenridge in 1996. Carmichael became the first Coloradan to medal in freestyle skiing when he won bronze in moguls at the 1992 Winter Olympics.

Olympic history: The ’92 games were Carmichael’s year

In 1986, the International Olympic Committee voted to separate the Summer and Winter games, placing them in alternating even-numbered years, starting in 1994. The 1992 Winter Olympics were the last to be staged in the same year as the Summer Olympics.
