The 1,500-acre Orvis Shorefox property annexed into Granby has suffered numerous setbacks in the past 18 months, including a $21 million foreclosure and a pond breach that discharged sediment into the Colorado River. Developers purchased the property in 2003 with plans for at least one golf course, commercial space and high-end riverside lots.

John Anarella, wilderness program manager for the U.S. Forest Service's Yampa Ranger District, said crews use cross-cutting saws that were made in the 1940s when cutting down trees because they're not allowed to use electric or gas-powered tools. Anarella recently purchased some more vintage saws for the Ranger District from a saw company in Seneca, N.Y.
