Steamboat Springs resident Wayne Kakela enjoys his Strawberry Park ranch in June of 2008. Kakela, a vibrant and inventive member of the local arts community, died of natural causes Saturday night at Steamboat Springs High School. He was 73.

Steamboat Springs snowboard racer Darren Ratcliffe takes an aggressive line in the qualifying round of the Race to the Cup NorAm event Friday night at Howelsen Hill. Ratcliffe defeated teammate Mike Trapp to win the slalom race. The racers will return for the parallel giant slalom today at Howelsen. Races are scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.

Melinda Clark recently was named executive director for the Steamboat Springs Pregnancy Resource Center. Clark plans to increase the services offered by the center and hopes the service can move into its own space instead of its current location at Holy Name Catholic Church.
