Two bright meteors tear through the night sky near Stagecoach Reservoir on Thursday night, the last night for prime viewing of the Perseids meteor shower. As awe inspiring as the brilliant flashes were, they - one on the left third of the photo, closer to the horizon than the top of the frame, and starting midway across the top of the photo and streaking down to the right - could be mistaken for scratches on the camera frame. Still, considering the complications involved in developing successful star photos, they amount to a resounding success.

Homeowner Kathy Woodford holds 1-year-old Kira while watering the front yard of her Red Hawk Village home in Stagecoach. Kathy and her husband, Scott, bought the home at the top of the market, and have watched as prices of other homes in the community have dropped.

Investors purchased many of the lots in the Red Hawk Village and were hoping to make money in the growing community of Stagecoach. But when the housing bubble burst, many investors were forced to sell for less than they wanted. The bust also presented a unique opportunity for many families in the valley looking for affordable alternatives.

Hans Casperson, of the Bureau of Land Management Craig Hotshots, takes a break Wednesday on the edge of the Allred Fire west of Sunbeam. Casperson joined about 100 BLM firefighters battling the blaze that began Monday afternoon. The fire was mostly contained by Wednesday.

T.J. Gholson, Craig Hotshots assistant superintendent, oversaw about 50 firefighters and 1,000 acres during the Allred Fire. He and his crew work locally but are part of a national firefighter network and spend a lot of time on the road.

"Moonscape" is the name given to the charred land left behind after a particularly destructive stretch of fire, such as the ground inside the Allred Fire area. T.J. Gholson said it takes longer for vegetation to grow back in these areas. However, a lot of the land in the area had a more preferable "mosaic" burn pattern, which left some grasses and trees standing.

Virgil Arment, helicopter crew supervisor for the Wyoming High Desert Helitack, joined the Allred Fire for the BLM's initial attack on the fire. Now that crews have contained the flames, he and his seven-person crew plan to return home to re-supply for another deployment.

Aspen resident Bobsy Sacks is among nearly 1,000 volunteers in Colorado and other states who tell stories to school children and other listeners through the Spellbinders program.
