Charlie Norris looks over the Oak Creek Cemetery on Friday with his wife, Mary Ruth Norris. Charlie Norris has been the cemetery's caretaker for 18 years but recently decided to submit his resignation after suffering injuries from a tractor accident. His son and son-in-law have submitted applications to take over his position.

Climbers make their way up the steep slope of K2 in Pakistan earlier this summer. Steamboat Springs doctor Eric Meyer was one of 22 who left the mountain's upper-most camp early Aug. 1. He spent much of the next three days using his high-altitude medical expertise to assist climbers who had been trapped high on the mountain, some as long as two days.

A long line of climbers makes its way through the Bottleneck on Aug. 1 on the upper reaches of K2. A slow start and the ominous look of the icy overhang that haunts that section of the climb persuaded Steamboat Springs doctor Eric Meyer to turn back. Avalanches swept down through the section later that night, trapping many above the perilous choke point and leading to 11 deaths.

The Depot Art Center is one of several downtown Steamboat Springs locations that is rumored to be haunted. Marion Kahn, executive director of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, said she's heard stories about people seeing lights in the building's basement after hours. "I work a lot of late nights, and I've never felt anything but friendly spirits here," Kahn said.

This eerie image reminded Tread of Pioneers Museum Assistant Katy Taylor of a ghost story about Laura Monson, who supposedly haunted her family's house long after her death. Occupants of the house said they noticed one of the home's antique rocking chairs - in which Monson spent much of her time after a crippling car accident - moving as though someone was sitting in it. The incidents continued on windless days into the 1970s, when someone got rid of the chair, Taylor said.

The Royal Hotel is home to Yampa's most prevalent ghost story. The spirit of a man named Rufus - who either died from the flu or was murdered, according to variations of the story - is said to roam the hotel's rooms and hallways. Some Yampa residents, including Leisure Mountain Studio owner Debbie Johnson, say they have felt Rufus' presence elsewhere in town.
