In the 95 years since Carl Howelsen hosted the first "Midwinter Sports Carnival" in Steamboat Springs, the event has captured a community's imagination and daredevil spirit with horse-drawn skiers, record-breaking jumps, parades and shovel rides down Lincoln Avenue, and lots of pyrotechnics.
