The aftereffects of an avalanche that buried local resident Mike Zimmerman Sunday in Rio Blanco County still were visible Monday. A weak snow pack, followed by heavier, prolonged snowfall, caused avalanche conditions across the U.S. and southwestern Canada. Eleven people have died this month in avalanches across the western United States.

On Sunday, Zimmerman was trapped in an avalanche at the site while snowmobiling with his father, Rusty, and Scott Brennise. After calling 911, Rusty and Brennise dug Mike out of the snow and transported him to an ambulance awaiting them at the trailhead.

Nicholaas Banda came to Steamboat Springs in October to work for Mountain Resorts, which is owned by Resort Group, on an H-2B work visa. Banda is from South Africa. Because of the slow start to the season, Resort Group and other companies are offering extra assistance to workers who haven't been able to garner typical paychecks.

Once one of the most explosive jumpers on the team, Estes said he's now playing at about 80 percent and has had to learn to jump off his right foot instead of his natural left.

A pair of ski tracks are flanked by two human-triggered avalanches on a backcountry pitch called the Ironing Board between Loveland Pass and Arapahoe Basin Ski Area last year. Facing slow sales of First Tracks' affordable condominiums, developers asked the Steamboat Springs City Council on Tuesday to amend the city's affordable housing regulations.
