Sailors player Ashton Palmer takes a cut at a pitch during the game between Steamboat Springs and Aspen at Howelsen Hill on Thursday afternoon. The Steamboat Springs High School softball team had a tough home loss Thursday against Aspen, a team it had one of its closest games with last season. Aspen came out with strong offense in the first inning, to put Steamboat in an 11-run hole. Aspen held on to win, 18-5. "The first two innings we were a little sketched, but after the first two, we rocked it," said Steamboat catcher Ashton Palmer, whose team held Aspen to three runs in the last two innings. Mataya Flaharty got Steamboat on the board early. And after knocking a triple in the fifth inning, Darcy Hornstein scored for the Sailors along with Palmer and Kirsten Delaney, who scored twice. Hornstein started the game on the mound and Delaney notched two strikeouts in relief. "They're coming back with a fight - we just have to get it together in the first few innings," Steamboat coach Maggie Garcia said. "Our bats are finally coming around and we're learning to run bases and everyone is finally sliding." Steamboat next plays a doubleheader against Rifle, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Soroco High School.
