Utah rancher Scott Chew rests on a fence before herding cattle into the back of a truck. Chew and his family spent the June day preparing to move cattle to their "summer ranches" on the Yampa River in Maybell and on the Elk River in Clark. Because of the chore, Chew did not have time to fix his broken irrigation system that day, leaving his fields drying in the sun. The number of irrigated agricultural acres in Northwest Colorado has decreased in recent years, from 230,000 in 1998 to 170,000 in 2005.

GIS specialist Nicolai Bencke of the U.S. Forest Service checks the snow depth on top of Buffalo Pass on May 22. Bencke conducted studies at the weather station through the winter and spring, and he said this year's heavy snowfall had an unusually high moisture content.
