Larry Frank Crawford Sr.
Larry Frank Crawford Sr., age 71, of Oak Creek, Colorado, passed away at the Doak Walker Care Center at Casey’s Pond in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in his sleep in the morning hours of March 5, 2014.
Larry was born to Frank and Wanda (Johns) Crawford on December 3, 1942 in Oak Creek, Colorado. Larry grew up on the family ranch, homesteaded in South Routt, off of County Road 14. His early life was spent doing what he loved most, ranching in Colorado and South Dakota.
Larry met his wife Pauline Means in Belle Fourche, South Dakota where they were married on June 14, 1961. Larry and Pauline moved back to Colorado where he continued with his passions of ranching, breaking horses and working cattle. In 1973, Larry went to work at Energy Fuels Coal Mine (Twentymile Coal Company) where he worked until mine operations went from the surface strip mine to underground mining. During his Energy Fuels Coal Mine days he continued his passion for working with horses by horse shoeing, breaking saddle horses and draft horses for himself and many others in Northwest Colorado.
Larry is survived by his mother Wanda Koehne of Yampa, sisters Ann (Earl) Cole of Yampa, Sue Mekelburg of Grand Junction. His children Susann (Dan) Allen of Phippsburg, Tammie Crawford of Oak Creek, Tracy (Karey) Viele of Yampa, and Larry Crawford Jr. of Steamboat Springs, as well as 7 grand children, 2 great grand children and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Larry was preceded in death by his father Frank and his wife Pauline.
During the winter months he could be found feeding his cattle from his hay sled behind a team of draft horses enjoying the quiet day and fresh clean air. One of his many hobbies was leather braiding while sitting by the warm fire.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Ladies Aid Hall in Yampa Colorado at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Doak Walker Care Center at Casey’s Pond, Attn: Jane / Joan, 2855 Hoot Owl Trail, Steamboat Springs CO 80487.
Larry was known for his quick wit, funny stories and infectious smile. He will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
