Kenneth Donald Stratton
September 20, 1945 - February 6, 2014
Kenneth Donald Stratton, of Steamboat Springs, passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of Feb. 6, 2014.
Ken was born to Paul and Esther Stratton, of Fort Collins, Colorado, on Aug 20, 1945. His early life was spent as a paper boy, newspaper printer and a student in Fort Collins. He earned a two year degree in Sterling at Northeastern Junior College.
While working in advertising at the Coloradoan he met his wife of 46 years, Jean. After brief stints in Greeley and Delta, Colorado, Ken and Jean purchased the Ben Franklin store in Steamboat in 1972. Soon afterwards they moved Ben Franklin down the street to a vacant lot; that once was the Acacia Hotel, before again re-developing the property into The Franklin Mall in the 1990’s. For the past 23 years their current business Favorite Things has been their focus. Helping families celebrate the holidays and bringing many smiles.
Ken believed that a hard days work was a testament to his love for his family; a physical demonstration of his love. He lived quietly in this world and left it quietly. He listened more than he spoke, he gave more than he took, and his jokes still bring a smile to the faces of those who knew him. His dry wit, friendship, determination, and his giant heart are missed.
Ken is survived by his wife Jean, sister Joan (Schneider) and husband Harry of Loveland, Colorado, his children Kenton, Dustin, Kristi (Coxon) and her husband Kenny, son Nicolas and his wife Morgan of Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as his grandchildren Zack and Tori (Coxon) of Steamboat in addition to many more nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A celebration of life is being planned for spring. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurses Association or the Boys and Girls Club of Steamboat.
