Former Steamboat Springs resident Rex Eugene Pielstick passed away unexpectedly Oct. 21, 2012, in Omaha, Neb. He was 71.
Rex was born Dec. 28, 1940, in Fargo, N.D., to Don Pielstick and Margaret (Anderson) Pielstick. He attended Madison High School in Madison, N.J. He received his undergraduate degree from Monmouth University in West Longbranch, N.J. and later received a master’s degree from Indiana University as well as multiple banking industry designations.
He met his wife, Anne Baughman, on the beach in Belmar, N.J., in the summer of 1968. They were married April 5, 1969, and had two sons. After moving to Colorado from New Jersey, they made Steamboat Springs their home for 25 years. They then moved to Kalispell, Mont., for three years before settling in Fort Collins.
Rex served as president of Alpine Federal Savings and Loan for 16 years before opening his own mortgage brokerage company, Northern Colorado Mortgage, which he operated for many years. While in Montana he served as president of Montana Mortgage Company. After moving to Fort Collins, Rex enjoyed semi-retirement, working for Home Depot, Wells Fargo and running his own handyman business.
Rex was active in many community and professional organizations. He served as president of the Colorado Mortgage Brokers Association; board member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka; president of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association; founding member of the Yampa Valley Community Foundation; and was instrumental in the preservation and expansion of Colorado Mountain College and establishing Boy Scout Troop 194 in Steamboat, where he was a Scout Leader.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Margaret Pielstick; and his older brother, Russell “Bucky” Pielstick.
He is survived by Anne, his wife of 43 years; his sons Matthew (Samantha), of Kansas City, Mo., and Michael (Dawn), of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren Jackson, Benjamin, Delanie, David and Isaac; sisters Elinor Elfner, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Dorothy “Dottie” Giersch, of New Bern, N.C.; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A memorial service was held Nov. 2 at First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins. A second memorial reception was held Nov. 3 at United Methodist Church of Steamboat Springs.
