Sarah Frances Colt Wither was born Oct. 3, 1915, in Las Animas to Douglass and Ida Scott Colt. She spent many of her childhood summers at the family ranch just west of Yampa, where she enjoyed riding horses and working around the ranch.
After graduating from Denver University, she came to Steamboat in 1938 to teach third grade, which she did until she married Robert (Bob) in 1940. They lived in Denver during World War II and moved to Steamboat and bought a house on Eighth Street in 1945.
Frances was preceded in death by Robert, her husband of 61 years. She is survived by her children, Peter (Barbi), John (Cindy) and Sarah/Sally; grandchildren, Tiffany Wither Leeson, and Scott, Jason and Allison Wither; and great-grandchildren, Skylar and Sophie Leeson and Owen Wither.
Frances was involved in many community activities, especially the Tread of Pioneers Museum, where she served on the board as secretary for 30 years. She also was involved in PEO, LRC, Eastern Star, the Unique Shop and square dancing.
She loved and cared for her family. For many years the family enjoyed hand-knit sweaters and ski socks, memorable meals for holiday gatherings at her house, homemade Halloween costumes and lots of homemade cookies and desserts. Holidays, especially Christmas, brought her the great pleasure of organizing and decorating her home for all to enjoy. Watercolor painting took the place of knitting in later years, and playing bridge brought her many happy hours.
Frances loved being outdoors and always had wonderful sweet peas in her backyard. Picnics at Fish Creek Falls, the hot springs and Ferndale were some of her favorite activities. Additionally, she very much enjoyed hiking, identifying wildflowers and walking in the community.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Frances’ honor to the Tread of Pioneers Museum, P.O. Box 772372, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477. For more information call the Yampa Valley Funeral Home at 970-879-1494.
