Carol Sue Stehley

Steamboat Springs

April 5, 1940 - July 9, 2012

Carol Sue Stehley was born April 5, 1940, in the old Willett Hospital on Seventh and Aspen streets in Steamboat Springs to Jack and Pearl Stehley. She was a premature baby, so small that Dr. Crawford created an incubator out of a shoe box.
Carol was an accomplished skier, skiing for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club from 1946 to 1958. She was coached by Gordy Wren, Crosby Perry-Smith and Rudi Schnackenberg. She was awarded the LRC (Ladies Recreation Club) trophy for most improved female skier in 1952. She reigned as the Ski Carnival Queen in 1957. She rode horses from age 5, and their pasture was Stehley Park. Carol was a member of Rainbow Girls and Eastern Star, and she was a lifelong member of LRC and PEO.
She graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1958 and earned her bachelor’s in education at Western State College. She taught in the Colorado Springs school system for more than 30 years and spent time between her home there and her childhood home in Steamboat.
Carol had a great love of horses and dogs and especially was fond of strays. She was an avid Rockies and Broncos fan.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Pearly Stehley. She is survived by cousins Phyllis Allen, the Lon and Tod Allens and the Gina (Allen) Walker family, all of Steamboat. She also is survived by the Surbrugg family, cousins originating from the Lamar and Denver areas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Routt County Humane Society, P.O. Box 772080, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
