Barbara Auter

Barbara J. Auter was born Dec. 23, 1925, to Donald D. and Dorothy F. Lockie in Berwyn, Ill. Her early childhood was spent in Illinois, till the family moved to Boulder. She graduated from Boulder High in 1943, later attending the University of Colorado. She graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in nursing.
Barbara then moved to Steamboat Springs and worked as a nurse at the Routt Memorial Hospital. On Dec. 17, 1956, Barbara married Charles A. Auter, a lifelong resident of Steamboat.
Throughout the years, Barbara worked many jobs at Lyon Drug and as a teacher’s aide at Soda Creek Elementary School, and was a homemaker. For a while, Barbara did volunteer work with LIFT-UP of Routt County and with the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, teaching classes in strength and balance to seniors, helping raise money and assisting seniors with transportation, housecleaning and cooking meals at the Senior Center. She also was instrumental in raising money to build the carport at Mountain View Manor in Steamboat.
She was predeceased by a brother, Alan S. Lockie, in 1986, and her husband, Charles, in 1997. Surviving are her three sons, Leonard Auter and Stephen Auter, both of Steamboat, and David Auter, of Fort Collins.
