David Lawrence “Unc” Sandelin, 81, died peacefully in his sleep at home April 17, 2011.
Born Oct. 25, 1929, David grew up along with his younger brother, Don, in the Fly Gulch area of North Routt County near the foot of Sleeping Giant mountain. He lived his entire life on this same homestead — often camping and fishing in the mountain ranges surrounding Routt County with family members and close friends.
During his lifetime, he provided many different services, including working as a ranch hand, custom haying, welding, facilitating ranch lifestyle living and more.
His family and close circle of friends were blessed to enjoy his stories and participate in his interests, which included reading history, horsemanship, fishing, playing cards (500 Rummy), trail riding and camping, to name a few. His interest in these activities brought genuine joy to David and to those around him.
They knew him to be a hard-working, kind, gentle, compassionate and giving person who exhibited many old-school talents, including being an all around fix-it-up and do-it-yourself kind of man.
David was neighborly and made friends easily personally and professionally through his kind words, his embracing and gracious mannerisms, and his longtime loyalty.
His distinctive laugh and smile touched the lives of so many and will be missed tremendously by those who had the pleasure to know him and were blessed to be considered his family.
David is survived by nephews William Carl Sandelin (Barb Wheeler) and Lloyd Ray Sandelin; niece Diane Lynn Sandelin; and numerous cousins and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Shirley Sandelin; and his brother Don.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m. April 21, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Steamboat Springs. A reception of David’s life at the church followed a graveside service at Elk Mountain Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 770652, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
