James Michael “Mike” Colt passed away peacefully on Feb. 5, 2010, at the age of 67, in Cumming, Ga. Born in Atlanta on Aug. 7, 1942, and a graduate of Marist High School and both Georgia Tech and the University of Alabama in Birmingham, he led a rich and fulfilling life that took him from the early days of NASCAR to the Atlanta Children’s Zoo, from Lockheed and the Skylab project to Chrysler, and Alabama to Steamboat Springs and the rest of Colorado, then back to NASCAR and Georgia. Just as comfortable working on a car or building a house as discussing the intricacies of world religions and national politics as well as the finer points of the Delta and Chicago blues, he held wide-ranging interests and passions that guided him to befriend people of all strata of life. His father, Walter Colt, preceded him in death; his mother, Vicky, his brother Jon, and his son Walt survive him. The family held a private memorial service to celebrate Mike’s life.
