Gladys imogene Marshall


Gladys I. Marshall, daughter of Thomas Ernis Rumbo and Josie Fox Rumbo, was born in Brownwood, Texas, on Aug. 23, 1916, and passed away Dec. 5, 2010, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig. She was 94 years old.
Reared in Texas and New Mexico, Gladys furthered her education at Howard Payne College and the University of New Mexico, receiving her master’s degree in education. Her life was devoted to teaching, and she taught in numerous one-room schools in and around Vona, N.M., and for 35 years she taught seventh- and eighth-grade math in the Jefferson County School District in Golden, retiring in 1971.
Gladys married Lawrence Williams Marshall Jr. in 1952. They lived in Golden and Lakewood during her teaching career. She was active in the Civil Air Patrol in Colorado and New Mexico. She volunteered to prepare tax returns for low-income people and was instrumental in organizing the “Vile for Life” program to help American Indian tribes in the Albuquerque, N.M., area. She began selling Avon with her mother and continued for 50-plus years, earning many Chairman Awards. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and shared her handiwork with family and friends. They enjoyed many musical jamborees.
Upon retirement, Gladys and Lawrence moved to Albuquerque and spent their retirement years traveling and enjoying various timeshares throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, along with owning their homes in Albuquerque and Quartzsite, Ariz.
Due to their health, they returned to Colorado to be near their niece Linda and her husband, Dusty Long, and families, living for a while in Craig and at The Haven Assisted Living Center in Hayden. The past two years, Gladys has been a resident at Sandrock Ridge Care & Rehab in Craig.
Gladys is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gertrude Crume; brother, Kenneth Rumbo; and stepdaughter Judy Marshall.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, who now resides in Meeker.; stepdaughter Janet Darling (Ron); stepgrandchildren Christy and Brian Darling; sister-in-law Marguerite Anderson; brother-in-law Virgil Marshall (Clarice); nieces Linda Long (Dusty), Sharon Glaze, Jean Glaze, Sherry Slape (Kenney), Becky Marshall, Lori Gonzales (Rafael), Helen Ostrounder; nephews Ron Marshall (Cathy) and Keith Rumbo; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
