Jane Katherine Luby

May 30, 1931 - December 25, 2008

Former Routt County resident Jane Katherine Luby passed away Dec. 25, 2008, in Portland, Ore. She was 77.
Jane Katherine DeKay was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on May 30, 1931, to Frank and Ida Jane DeKay. She later met and married William (Bill) Luby while attending college in Colorado. They moved to Steamboat Springs in 1951.
Jane devoted countless hours to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club by timing events, gate keeping and shuttling children to practice and ski meets. She loved being involved with her children and the community, whether it was by selling Winter Carnival buttons, timing swim meets, working the concession stand at the rodeo or being a den mother to Boy Scouts.
Until her retirement in 1995, Jane worked as a contracting officer with the U.S. Forest Service in the Routt and Siskiyou national forests. She and Bill moved to Grants Pass, Ore., in 1989. Jane's greatest pleasure was found in traveling with Bill to see her children and grandchildren or to visit warm island destinations.
Jane wrote to her children many years ago: "Please don't grieve too much. I had a really good and interesting life that took some different avenues than I expected at times, but I had fun and enjoyed it! I want you to celebrate my good life with smiles, jokes and remembrances."
She is survived by her sister, Marian Payne; children William Luby, Mike Luby, Mary Keogh, Elizabeth Torres and Patty Luby; and her 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Grants Pass, Ore., in summer. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your local hospice.
