Former Toponas resident Evelyn Jean "Jeannie" Northrop died Feb. 8, 2009, at her home in Fallon, Nev., after a long battle with cancer. She was 72.
Jean was born in Oakley, Kan., on March 31, 1936, to James "Bud" and Lila Yates Huffman. When she was 9 years old, the family moved to a dairy outside Colorado Springs. In 1950, they moved to a ranch in Toponas. She attended elementary school in Toponas and secondary school at Yampa Union High School.
She married Bill Northrop and they had five sons: Billy Northrop and his wife Brenda, of Yampa; Rusty Northrop and his wife Lisa, of Carnation, Wash.; Doug Northrop and wife Terri, of Yampa; and Rodney Northrop and his wife Irene, of Fallon, Nev. Son Ricky Northrop died in 2008. Jean is survived by 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved.
The oldest of five, Jean is survived by brothers Donald Huffman, of Rockaway Beach, Ore.; and Darrell Huffman, of Cascade, Mont.; and sister, Geneva Taylor, of Steamboat Springs. She was preceded in death by sister Joan Look, of Steamboat Springs, and her parents, Bud and Lila Huffman. Jean always had a love for people, living in the country and horses.
A funeral was held Saturday at Yampa Bible Church.
