Steamboat Springs resident Helen Catherine Redding Thoney passed away at the Doak Walker Care Center on Oct. 9, 2007. She was 99.
Helen was born April 18, 1908, in Chicago, Ill., to Theodore and Catherine Redding. She had one brother, Marcellus "Slim" Redding. Helen's parents died at an early age, leaving her brother and Helen in the care of an aunt and uncle in Plymouth, Ind.
Upon high school graduation, Helen moved to Chicago, where she met and married Emmert Arthur Thoney in 1940.
Shortly after her husband's death, she moved to Denver and remained there until she moved to Steamboat Springs in 1995.
Helen had a passion for gardening, playing golf and handcrafts. She loved to travel with anyone willing to go. She will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, love of ice cream, cake and wine.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Emmert, and brother, Slim.
She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Madderom; a son-in-law, Jim of Steamboat Springs; one granddaughter, Michelle Mackey; grandson-in-law Mark Mackey, also of Steamboat Springs; six nieces and one nephew.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the United Methodist Church in Steamboat. An additional service will be held in Chicago in the spring of 2008.
