Charles Benjamin Howe Jr.

August 23, 1920 - May 30, 2007

Former Yampa resident and beloved husband, father, grandfather, relative and friend Charles Benjamin Howe Jr., passed away May 30, 2007, at home following a lengthy illness, while surrounded by his family. He was 87.
He was born Aug. 23, 1920, near Fort Morgan to Charles B. and Sarah (Preeo) Howe, Sr. He was raised near New Raymer until his family moved to Yampa when he was 16 years old.
Charles joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at 18. As a dedicated American, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps when he was 21. He was stationed in the South Pacific and was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific with four stars, Presidential Citation Unit with two stars, Good Conduct and Victory medals.
Charles married Maxine Johns on Oct. 7,1946, in Craig and had three sons. Charles worked for the U.S. Forest Service while they lived in Walden from 1956 until 1980. Following his retirement, he and his Maxine moved to Sunbeam, northeast of Maybell, where they spent many months building their own log home for their family.
Charles loved hunting, fishing, trapping and camping with his family. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Walden and Craig.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Anna Klumker, Esther Soter and Martha Howe; and brothers Steve and Wesley.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Howe, of Sunbeam; sons Chip L. and his wife, Jacquline Howe, of Maybell, Donald F. and his wife, Laurie Howe, of Greeley, and C. Benjamin Howe III and friend, Loree Munson, of Greeley; grandchildren Gregory, Scott, Casey, Levi, Sheyanne, Eric, Bryan, Tara and Charles B. IV; great-grandchildren Sy and Alahia; sisters Mary Johns, of Fort Collins, Clara Miles, of Hayfork, Calif., and Grace Compestine, of Steamboat Springs; brother, Raymond Howe of Yuma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation took place at the family's request. No services were held. Memorial donations may be made to the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, in care of Grant Mortuary, 621 Yampa Ave., Craig, CO 81625.
