Betty Eloise Hassig Sonju

September 25, 1929 - June 23, 2007

Longtime Routt County resident Betty Eloise Hassig Sonju's beautiful soul started a new journey June 23, 2007. She was 77.
She was born and raised on a homestead in Toponas. She was the fourth of six born to Vinton and Gertrude Hassig on Sept. 25, 1929. She graduated in 1948 from Yampa High School and met and married William A. Sonju on Oct. 25, 1953. Betty has had various jobs, from switchboard operator to waitress to nursing home staff. She loved to knit, crochet, garden, cook and sew, but her biggest love and most important job was taking care of her family.
She is missed by her husband, William Sonju; children Greg and his wife, Malisa Sonju, and their children, Madison, Sam, and Ema Powell, of Castle Rock; Erin and her husband, Josh Fach, of Lawton, Okla.; Katie Sonju of Woodland Park; Delonna and her husband, Dean Waters, and their children, Karla and Kyle, of Woodland Park; Karen and her husband, Bob Shaffer, and their children, Alena and Jared, of Butler, Penn.; Bill V. Sonju of Las Animas; Stephanie and her husband, Rick Davis, and their children, Courtney and Ethan, of Coal Creek; siblings Irwin and his wife,Charlene Hassig, Aldeen Schanck, Naomi and her husband, Leonard Norman, Shirley and her husband, Lyle Hulvey, and Jackie and her husband, Walt Schnieder; and numerous nieces and nephews who she loved.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. June 30, 2007, at Yampa Bible Church, 741 Moffat Ave., in Yampa with Pastor Bruce C. Chikalla officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at 115 W. Abriendo Ave., Pueblo, CO 81004. Arrangements are being handled through Holt Funeral Home.
