Former Yampa resident Larry Loyd Schroeder died Oct. 7, 2006, in St. George, Utah. He was 64.
He was born Aug. 2, 1942, in Port Townsend, Wash. He was raised by his father, Harry Croman and his mother, Marjorie Calkins. On Aug. 12, 1979, he married Shirley Shreves in Montrose.
Larry grew up primarily in Alaska. His life's work was in school administration, but his love for the students and the teaching kept him in the classroom, even as he worked as a superintendent. Throughout his life, he found satisfaction in mentoring and helping others. Larry worked as the superintendent of the South Routt School District from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, he and Shirley retired to Scenic, Ariz. He loved people and found joy in serving in his community and through his church, the River Valley Bible Church. He enjoyed bowling, the outdoors, hunting, fishing and being in the mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Scenic, Ariz.; one son, Bill Schroeder of Fort Collins; his mother, Marjorie Croman of Cleveland, Okla.; one brother, Garry Croman, of Washington; two sisters, Laurie and her husband, Randy Cummings, of Cleveland, Okla., and Bobbi and her husband, Pete Carson, of North Dakota.
There will be a celebration of life in his honor at 2 p.m. Nov. 5, 2006, at the Turn of the Century Special Events Center, 117 North Fourth St. in Montrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the River Valley Bible Church Missionary Fund or to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah.
