Darrell Hoaglund

Steamboat Springs resident Darrell "Swede" Hoaglund died July 24, 2006. He was 72.
Darrell was born Oct. 2, 1933, in Aspen to Arden and Gertrude (Neller) Hoaglund. He moved to Rulison in 1946 and graduated from Rifle High School in 1951. He worked on his family's ranch on the Colorado River, milking cows at the dairy, fencing, farming, raising cattle and sheep and haying. He spent a lot of time riding his horse and trailing sheep to the top of the Bookcliffs.
In 1962, Darrell met and married Nell Surrette, an English teacher. They moved to Grand Valley while Darrell worked in the energy industry mining oil shale, uranium and gold all across the Western Slope. He was known and respected as a top-notch mechanic capable of fixing anything that broke in the mine or elsewhere
He moved to Steamboat Springs in 1976 to work at Energy Fuels Coal Mine, now operated as Twentymile Coal Co. He purchased a ranch at the foot of Yellowjacket Pass, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He continued working at Twentymile until his retirement in 1999. He was famous for swinging his 16-pound sledgehammer with one hand. He liked to attend the Routt County Fair, where he entered his potatoes and hay. He enjoyed volunteering with 4-H and was always eager to help people.
Darrell was always a hard worker and loved his ranch. He loved the land and maintaining his antique tractors, which he used year-round for everything. He never owned a tractor built after 1960. There was nothing he couldn't fix or repair in his shop he built on the ranch. He also loved the outdoors, his animals, logging on Lynx Pass, fishing, hunting and barbecuing. He loved spending time with his daughters and grandkids, teaching them how to drive all of his tractors, weld, repair, mechanic and hay.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nell; his three daughters, Cheryl Schultz and her son, Chris, of Chinook, Mont.; Mari Jo Brown and her sons, Allan and Bruce, of Loveland; and Janelle K. Hoaglund of Steamboat Springs; his five dogs, Shelby, Lucy, Kate, Buster and Jeb; and his shop companion, Tom Cat.
