Steamboat Springs resident JoDett Freeman died Dec. 20, 2006.
JoDett was born in 1951 to Col. Robert D. Whittington and Ada Mae Whittington.
JoDett was retired from teaching elementary school for Louisiana Public Schools in Bossier City. She taught for 12 years at Discovery Learning Center in Steamboat Springs. Through those years, she spread her love and knowledge to thousands of children. Many of those children have not only graduated from college but have started productive lives of their own. Over the many years, literally hundreds of previous students and fellow faculty corresponded with JoDett and are a living testimony of the love that JoDett felt for them and they for her.
JoDett was never hesitant to express her love for family and friends. That openness, bubbly and friendly nature endeared her to those around her. The outpouring of generosity and kindness from JoDett's friends to the surviving family members has been overwhelming and greatly appreciated. Clearly, she touched the hearts of many, and she received much love in return. Paraphrasing a quote from the "Wizard of Oz," "The size of one's heart is not judged by how much she loves, but how much she is loved by others."
As a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Steamboat, she spoke often of how much she valued the fellowship and spiritual leadership she experienced there.
The sincere gratitude on behalf of JoDett and her family for the support of so many wonderful friends is immeasurable.
To JoDett: We will always love you and will never forget you.
JoDett is preceded in death by her father, Col. Robert D. Whittington; her mother, Ada Mae Whittington; and her sister, Louise Fricks.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Freeman; her brothers, Joseph Whittington and his wife, Anne, and Robert Whittington and his wife, Dot; and many other relatives that she cherished so greatly.
A memorial service in JoDett's honor was held Dec. 27, 2006, at St Paul's Episcopal Church. For the many friends and family of JoDett in the Northern Louisiana area, a service will be held at the Church of the Holy Cross in Shreveport. The date and time will be announced in Shreveport as soon as possible.
A memorial fund for Heifer International (www.heifer.org) is set up in JoDett's honor in care of the Yampa Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 776090, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
