Yampatika honored by Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife

Yampatika naturalist Karen Vail describes the geology in the Fish Creek Canyon area while leading a hike of the Uranium Mine Trail with Steamboat Springs Middle School students in March 2013.

— The Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife has recognized a local non-profit for its work in getting people outside.

Yampatika was named Partner of the Year for the Northwest Colorado region during the Parks and Wildlife Partnership Conference on Feb. 21 in Colorado Springs.

“Partners are absolutely critical to our mission as an agency,” Parks and Wildlife Director Bob Broscheid said in a press release. “Time and financial resources are limited for everyone. When we are able to leverage all of those limited resources together in the same direction, we can all make great things happen.”

Yampatika, founded in 1992, is based in Steamboat Springs and offers outdoors programs in Routt, Moffat and Jackson counties.

Yampatika puts on a vast number of free activities for people of all ages. During the winter months, programs include guided snowshoe hikes and ski tours. During the summer, Yampatika holds two-week science camps for children between 5 and 14 years old. Bird watching, mineral springs tours, wild mushroom collecting and astronomy exploration help round out the programming.

“It has been a great partnership and they truly deserve the recognition,” Steamboat Springs District Wildlife Manager Danielle Isenhart said in the press release. “Every time a child or young adult has a fun, memorable experience outdoors, it can lead to a lifetime of appreciation for what nature has to offer. Yampatika understand the importance of providing education and guidance for a variety of activities that the public can enjoy.”
