Yampatika celebrates 25th with anniversary outing, book of 25 favorite hikes

This year marks Yampatika's 25th anniversary season.

As part of its celebration, the nonprofit dedicated to inspiring environmental stewardship through education has scheduled a variety of events during the next few months.

Among the is this weekend's Anniversary Hike, which will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the U.S. Forest Service Building, 925 Weiss Drive, with a few or the group’s naturalists leading several hikes listed in Yampatika's newly published book, "Come Explore with Us Around Steamboat Springs: 25 Favorite Hikes from Friends of Yampatika.”

The book is a compilation of favorite hikes contributed by Yampatika members, donors, partners, board members, volunteers, summer camp parents, advisors and program participants. It is not a detailed hiking guide; rather, the book honors the voice and opinions of the contributors and reflects their passion for hiking.

“For a quarter of a decade, Yampatika has been working to get people outside,” said Yampatika Executive Director Joe Haines. “We believe that, by experiencing nature firsthand, people will be better stewards of the beautiful environment we all share and appreciate in the Yampa Valley. We couldn’t think of a better way to do that than by creating our friendly hiking guide, which includes many unknown treasures, all within an hour’s drive of Steamboat Springs.”

The 70-plus page book is supplemented by photographs contributed by Karen Vail and Karen Pharis and is written in a story format, said Shari Fryer, board president, who, with Holly Hampson, did a majority of the editing. Hampson is also a board member and did most of the project management for the book.

"The book lists suggested favorite hikes that are a bit more off-the-radar, and some, I didn't even know about, like Mosquito Lake Hike over in the Flat Tops," said Fryer. "It's big on personality and passion but light on detail of technical information, like elevation gains."

“Come Explore With Us” is available for $18.99 from Yampa Valley Bank, 600 S. Lincoln Ave., and Yampatika’s Nature Store, 925 Weiss Drive. All proceeds from book sales will be used for environmental education programs in the Yampa Valley. Call 970-871-9151 for more information.

"To make a nonprofit successful, it takes a whole community, and this books is a representation of that same natural, because so many people go behind it to make this a reality," Fryer said.
