Woman’s name incorrectly included in July 29 Jail Report

Steamboat Today

— A Steamboat Springs woman's name mistakenly appeared in the July 29 Steamboat Pilot & Today Jail Report, which is a list of people arrested and booked into Routt County Jail the previous week.

Marlene M. Ward, 26, was not arrested July 25 and instead was the victim of a crime when she reported that her wallet had been stolen.

On that same day, Steamboat Springs Police Department officers arrested Merrily N. Waldron, 38, of Steamboat, on suspicion of theft, taking alcohol from a licensed premise and violation of a protection order.

Steamboat Police Capt. Jerry Stabile said that while booking Waldron into jail, Ward's name accidentally was chosen from a drop-down menu in a new computer system that was launched in March. The arresting officer realized the mistake at the time of the booking, but Ward's name never was deleted from the system. Ward's name subsequently was included as part of the arrest report compiled by the Routt County Jail and sent to the Pilot & Today. The Pilot & Today published the arrest report, including Ward's name, on July 29.

Stabile said the error will be removed from the records system. The Steamboat Today has removed Ward's name from the online version of the Jail Report.

The Steamboat Springs Police Department, Routt County Jail and Steamboat Today investigated the incident Tuesday after being contacted by Ward, and steps are being taken to make sure the mistake doesn't happen again.
