Woman hurts back in snowmobile mishap

Steamboat Springs — A snowmobile mishap seriously injured a woman Wednesday on Rabbit Ears Pass.
Bonni Wittstadt, 26, of Baltimore, Md., sustained a fractured vertebra and was listed in serious condition Thursday at Swedish Medical Center near Denver. She was flown there by Mountain Flight Services of Steamboat Springs after diagnosis at Routt Memorial Hospital, spokeswoman Christine MvKelvie said.
Wittstadt was riding on the back of a snowmobile driven by her husband, rented from Steamboat Snowmobile Tours, Routt County Sheriff's Office investigator Paul Pirnat said. When riding in a tour group shortly before noon, not far from the county border, they hit a bump and she apparently was injured when landing on the back of the snowmobile.
Routt County Search and Rescue crews assisted in retrieving her and transporting her to an ambulance. If victims are far enough into forest areas, such retrieval is standard procedure because the rescue crews have the proper immobilizing equipment and sleds, he said.
