With sights set on nationals, cheerleaders to hold fundraiser

The Steamboat Springs High School cheerleading team is hosting a Lil Sailors Cheer Clinic fundraiser for boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth grade Saturday. The clinic, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the high school commons area, costs $25 per child and $20 for additional siblings. All proceeds will go the high school cheerleading squad and its goal of traveling to a national competition in Orlando, Fla.

Lil Sailors Cheer Clinic attendees will receive a T-shirt, pompoms, a snack and drinks. The kids will learn Sailors cheers, jumps and dances. Attendees then will be invited to join the high school cheerleaders during a halftime performance at the Sept. 28 homecoming football game. Register at the high school office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday or Friday, or contact Paula Salky at paulasalky@gmail.com or 970-819-2170.

High school cheerleading coach Shannon Keesee said this year's varsity squad is poised to earn a fifth consecutive bid to the national competition. Team members Sydney Finkbohner, Guerin Lewis and Miranda Salky were named All-American cheerleaders at a summer camp in Denver. Finkbohner, along with Brandi Salazar, is a captain of the team. The Steamboat Springs High School cheerleading squad finished first in the camp's coed division for its cheer and dance routines.
