It was the opening event of the USASA Rocky Mountain Series, an amateur regional series. Koski said the Copper Mountain terrain drew a larger-than-usual pack – including international racers – because it was also the opening event in the U.S. Snowboard Race to the Cup.

SSWSC snowboarders raced in slalom and giant slalom events in various age and class levels. For an early season event and facing stiff competition, Koski likes where her team stands with the rest of the winter schedule ahead.

“I think that they all rode incredibly well for their first time being on snow,” Koski said. “(For) a lot of the riders, their first day of snow was Saturday.”

A number of racers got on the podium Sunday. In open class giant slalom, Maggie Carrigan took second and was pushed heavily by her Korean opponents, Koski said.

In breaker boys giant slalom, Winston Vaughan and Cody Winters held the top two podium spots. Garrett Denney won junior men’s giant slalom, and Conrad Sacher and Tommy Boldt snagged first and second in jam’s men, respectively.

Koski said men’s open class giant slalom was packed with talent. Ezio Argento was second in the event, Ryan Rosencranz placed fourth, and Billy Winters – originally a slopestyle snowboarder – grabbed seventh in his first year competing in the open class level.

After breakout years in 2011 and 2012, Billy Winters has reverted most of his training to giant slalom, slalom and bordercross.

“He’s an incredible all-around athlete,” Koski said about Billy Winters. “So he had to make a difficult decision and choose between the two. Last year was his first year racing in the Race to the Cup.”

Billy and Cody’s father, Dave Winters, is a new SSWSC assistant race coach and took on the 60-and-older slalom methuselah division, placing second.

Carrigan followed up her second-place giant slalom finish with gold in the women’s slalom open class. On the podium, she stood alongside Katie Keough, who grabbed second.

The men’s slalom open class was packed with Steamboat snowboarders at the top. Argento won the event, followed by Rosencranz in second, Robby Burns in third, Everett McEwan in fourth and Billy Winters in fifth.

Steamboat racers also made some noise in other slalom events. Cody Winters and Vaughan took one-two in breaker boys, Denney won junior men’s, and Boldt was second in jam’s men with Sacher right behind in third.

Even though Koski’s snowboarders turned in some impressive results, she said the team has a long way to go and improvements are on the horizon.

“Once they have training under them, they will do a little bit better,” Koski said. “It’s an early season race.”
