Willie Richardson and Kathleen Marie Kelly: Let your voice be heard

I am one of the representatives of a citizens' opposition group that seeks to prevent the Oak Creek Town Board from approving Dank Franks' proposed application for a marijuana grow, dispensary and manufacturing operation in the heart of Oak Creek between existing residential uses and land owned by the library district. We are not opposed to the legalization of marijuana.

The Town of Oak Creek Planning Board is meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Town Hall to review and consider a land use application by petitioner Dank Frank's LLC. This application will entail a "minor land use change" to Oak Creek's Title 17 Land Use Code.

This proposal calls for new three-story building on the south side of the historic Circle R Building. Dank Frank has applied for a retail marijuana manufacturing establishment, grow and cultivation facility and MIPMF (marijuana infused product manufacturing facility) and recently added an application for a retail storefront. Many residents in town have no knowledge of the scope of this proposed project or any awareness of this proposal.

It is our understanding that the manufacturing of these types of products could involve potential volatile organic compounds. The super-concentration of marijuana for infusion into these products increases the potency to pharmaceutical and psychoactive levels.

We oppose this project because it will be next to a multifamily residence and adjacent to single-family homes and site of the future South Routt Library. This project appears to be a clear violation of the "vision" of the recently amended Oak Creek land use code.

There are currently three marijuana cultivation facilities in operation in Oak Creek. Should we not wait to see how these existing operations will affect our citizenry and town before we approve any more facilities of this sort? Let's pause and wait and see what the long-term consequences will bring.
