Wal-Mart employee arrested after alleged threat to co-worker

A Wal-Mart employee was arrested Friday morning after allegedly threatening to stab a co-worker with a blade.

According to police reports, 39-year-old Hassane Fam told fellow Wal-Mart employee Michael Noland Jr. that he was going to kill him after the two had argued while unloading a truck full of merchandise at the Wal-Mart on Central Park Drive.

Fam was charged with fifth-degree felony menacing and was held overnight at the Routt County Jail. He was held without bond because of the violent nature of the crime, Steamboat Springs Assistant Police Chief Art Fiebing said.

Fam’s bond was set at $2,000 Friday afternoon. He bonded out of jail shortly thereafter, according to the Routt County Jail.

Noland told police that he and a group of employees, including Fam, were supposed to be unloading a truck Thursday night. He said Fam was standing around, not working.

Noland reportedly asked Fam why he was being so lazy. The only words that Noland could understand from Fam’s reply were expletives. Fam speaks broken English, Fiebing said.

Jeff Schmidt, the Wal-Mart employee in charge, approached Fam and asked him to get back to work.

Fam reportedly replied, “If you have a problem, I’ll kill you.” Schmidt continued to try to reason with the suspect, but reportedly Fam kept “puffing out his chest and coming toward Schmidt,” Fiebing said.

Noland told police that Fam turned to him, said, “I’m going to kill you,” and came toward him with the extended blade of a Wal-Mart-issued box cutter.

Noland told police he was “backing up for his life,” and he believed that Fam was going to kill him.

Schmidt jumped between the two men to break up the fight, according to police reports.

Police arrived shortly thereafter; another employee had called to report the incident.

Fam was placed under arrest and transported to the Routt County Jail.
