Topping the news this morning, the race for Routt County sheriff is getting expensive. Democrat Gary Wall and Republican Garrett Wiggins have raised more than $14,000 each, the most of any Routt County candidates. Democratic county commissioner candidate Diane Mitsch Bush has raised $12,715 while her opponent, Paul Strong, has raised $8,155. Tapes of a secret meeting held September 25 in Oak Creek show three town employees thought former Mayor Kathy Cargo Rodeman was too involved in town business and was acting as town manager, not the town’s mayor. The employees who complained were Town Clerk Karen Halterman, Billing Clerk Vivian Johnson and Public Works Director Jim Photos. The Steamboat Pilot & Today challenged the legality of the closed meeting and forced the release of the tapes of the meeting. For more, visit seamboatpilot.com

South Routt School District officials believe school security and the safety of its staff and students is one of the most important issues facing the small, rural district. On Wednesday, Superintendent Kelly Reed, Soroco Secondary Principal James Chamberlin, South Routt Elementary School Principal Michael Young and district director of operations and maintenance, Maurice Glenn, met with county law enforcement and emergency personnel to discuss emergency preparedness and response. The meeting lasted nearly 90 minutes, and was one of several things the district is doing to maximize school security and safety, Reed said. He added that there have been administrative team and accountability team meetings regarding school safety, as well. Subsequent meetings, drills, building upgrades and communication are being scheduled for the near future.

The former Bottleneck building downtown will be the new home for businesses that cater to children and moms. Laura Bischoff, owner of Lola’s Closet, Steamboat Kids and Bliss Maternity and Baby Couture, is moving her stores into the first floor of the building at 734 Lincoln Ave. Bischoff said the site is a better location for her businesses.

In Sports, The Steamboat Springs Sailors can wrap up the Western Slope League Championship Friday against Battle Mountain. The Sailors beat the Rifle Bears Friday night to move to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in league play. The Sailors have won five straight games. Rifle entered the game unbeaten in league play.

The Hayden Tigers also are in the drivers seat in Class 1A after defeating league rival Meeker on Friday. Like Steamboat, Hayden is 8-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
