The Steamboat Springs School Board has a new president. Members voted unanimously to elect Denise Connelly, a former teacher, as their next leader. Connelly replaces Tom Miller-Freutel, the former president who resigned Aug. 28 for personal reasons. Miller-Freutel’s seat remains vacant.
There will be no shortage of political events in Routt County during the next six weeks, leading up to Election Day on Nov. 7. Bob Martinez, chair of the state Republican Party, will visit Steamboat Springs on Saturday for the “Republican Victory Rally 2006.” Also on the calendar is a forum Friday in Hahn’s Peak village, an Oct. 1 visit from state Sen. Ken Gordon, the Democratic candidate for Colorado Secretary of State; a “Dance with the Candidates” night Oct. 6 in Oak Creek; and a candidate forum in the Steamboat Springs High School auditorium Oct. 10. Workers are trying to improve a stream habitat on the Yampa River just south of Steamboat Springs. The effort is part of an ongoing project at the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area, where workers are installing native vegetation on a stretch of cleared riverbank to reduce erosion and improve the riparian habitat. The wildlife area is near Routt County Road 14F.

In sports, the city is holding an open house at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs to show off the results of a $3 million dollar improvement project that began in August 2005. The celebration, which is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, will feature the high school boys tennis practice, tennis contests and a drawing for a free lesson and court time. There will be refreshments and other door prizes.
