US Olympic Committee will not bid for 2022 Winter Games
July 11, 2012
Steamboat Springs — The U.S. Olympic Committee will not bid for the 2022 Winter Games, instead choosing to explore the possibility of hosting the Summer Olympics in 2024 or the Winter Olympics in 2026, according to The Denver Post.
When talk of a 2022 Olympic bid for Denver surfaced in late 2011, the Steamboat Today reported that Nordic or freestyle skiing events could be hosted in Steamboat Springs.
In 1972, Denver was awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics, but it became the first and only city to decline an Olympic offer. The reason: Colorado taxpayers voted against using public funds to underwrite the costs of hosting the games. Had those Olympics come to fruition, Steamboat would have hosted the Nordic events.
