US moguls team features 5 with ties to Steamboat

Luke Graham

— The 2014 U.S. Freestyle Moguls Team was named earlier this week with several skiers with Steamboat Springs ties making the list.

Veterans Eliza Outtrim and Patrick Deneen were named to the A Team, with three other Steamboat athletes earning bids on the team.

Steamboat skier Jeremy Cota made the B Team, and skiers Brittany Loweree and Sophia Schwartz made the C Team.

With a likely six spots up for grabs for the Olympics in Sochi, Russia — three each on the men’s and women's teams — the competition should be interesting during the next several months.

Outtrim and Deneen seem to have an inside track based on results from last season.

Deneen was the 2009 World Champion and was second in the World Cup standings in 2012. He had six World Cup podiums last season, including a second-place finish in Sochi.

Outtrim had four World Cup podiums last season and also finished second in Sochi.

For Cota, last season was a lost year as he battled a painful heel injury all year. He started the season on the A Team but was dropped because of the injury. He began the year with a podium in the first World Cup of the year, but struggled with the injury the rest of the season. Still, Cota should have ample opportunity to make the Olympic team with the men's squad.

Health "is a huge part of it, especially in our sport," Cota said. "There are so many little injuries, being 100 percent is a rare thing. I'm really excited where I'm at health-wise. It's been fine, and I think I'll be good going forward."

Loweree's best finish in a World Cup was 19th in Deer Valley, Utah, last year.

An eye should be kept on Schwartz, though. In addition to winning the NorAm tour last season, she won a National Championship at the year-end event in Heavenly, Calif. last season.

The U.S. team heads to Finland next week for the season-opening World Cup on Dec. 14 in Ruka. The World Cup continues Jan. 9 to 11 in Deer Valley and Jan. 15 to 18 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
