Undefeated Palisade crushes Steamboat football

Ben Ingersoll

— An undefeated Palisade football team proved to be too much for Steamboat Springs on Friday night when the Sailors fell, 56-0.

Palisade was up only 7-0 after one quarter but cemented a very comfortable 42-0 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Bears tacked on a couple of second-half scores to remain perfect on the season.

Despite suffering their worst loss of the season, Sailors coach Lonn Clementson said that it was a "glass half-full" game and that he saw a lot on which his players can build.

"The score didn't reflect the really good things we did tonight," Clementson said. "We're close. It's hard to hear that when you see 56-0, but if we can clean up some things as a team, we're hoping to take the next step."

Steamboat handed a solid Bulldogs squad a few gifts early, throwing some interceptions, giving up a blocked punt and missing a chip-shot field goal on one of the Sailors' few deep drives.

The loss dropped the Sailors to 4-3 on the season and 3-3 in league play, but Clementson said there was as much promise in this 56-point loss as Steamboat's past few come-from-behind victories.

"Film and another solid week of practice are going to make us better," Clementson said. "We know we have a super huge challenge” next game."

Clementson lauded the play of the offensive line in pass protection and said wide receiver/defensive back Billy Clark played possibly his best game of the season.

Steamboat will return to Gardner Field on Friday to host one of the only teams to really challenge Palisade this season: Rifle. The Bears suffered a one-point loss to Palisade just a few weeks ago.

The Sailors will kickoff against Rifle at 7 p.m.
