Two dead in plane crash on Rabbit Ears Pass

Steamboat Pilot & Today staff

After a search for a crashed plane Saturday night on Rabbit Ears Pass, the two passengers were discovered dead.

The plane was reported overdue late Saturday afternoon.

The plane had left Steamboat on Saturday headed for Boulder but never arrived. Routt County Search and Rescue’s Jim Linville said before the crash site was found that the plane was not based out of Steamboat, and he was told two people were on board. He did not know what kind of plane it was.

The wreckage was located in the Harrison Creek drainage south of South Walton Peak. Linville said at least two planes have crashed there in the past 10 years. In the past, pilots not familiar with the terrain misjudged how much elevation they needed to gain to clear the drainage, Linville said.

Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch said at about 3 a.m. Sunday morning that the wreckage had been found. Recovery efforts were going to resume at 7 a.m. Sunday.

The names of the deceased were not immediately released.
